A BIRTHDAY WISH SERVICE PROJECT

Project Overview
AARP has always been about volunteer service.  In 1958, the Association was founded by a volunteer, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, and continues to be inspired by her guiding principle “to serve, not to be served.” On September 21, in honor of Ethel’s birthday, Create the Good is hosting a virtual event that will connect volunteers from across the country for a service project making cards for veterans, military families and healthcare workers.

During the LIVE event, participants will come together to make cards, connect with like-minded volunteers, and enjoy messages of inspiration from a variety of special guests.  Following the event, completed cards will be mailed (by the participant) to various U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) locations around the country thanks to Create the Good’s partnership with Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) which has agreed to accept the cards and help with distribution. Participants can find a VA location in their state by clicking here (or the red button below). When searching for the closest medical center near you, select "VA health" under the Facility Type field.

Please send the card(s) to the attention of Veteran Affairs Voluntary Service and write #AARPSalutesVets on the envelope so the VAVS  team recognizes that it came from this project. Cards must be mailed no later than September 30, 2020.

Registration
Event registration will open on Friday, September 11, 2020 following an announcement on Create the Good’s Facebook page at 1:00 pm ET.  Participants will have the choice to join by Zoom for a more interactive experience or view the event LIVE by visiting Create the Good’s Facebook page.

Note: When joining the event through Zoom, please note that the event will stream live to Create the Good's Facebook page. If you choose to turn your video camera on, your background will be visible during the live event. Participants should be aware of their surroundings and respectful at all times. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated and may result in the participant being removed from the event.

This event is FREE and open to the public.  Help us spread the word by inviting friends and family to participate with you!
