5 WAYS FAMILIES CAN SHOW GRATITUDE BY GIVING BACK THIS THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on and express gratitude for the good things in our lives, but it’s also the perfect season for families to embrace the spirit of giving. Volunteering together allows families to strengthen their bonds, create meaningful memories, and share their gratitude with others. Fall and Thanksgiving bring a variety of opportunities to show appreciation—whether by helping those in need, supporting the community, or being a friendly voice to others. Here are five meaningful ways your family can give back during this season of gratitude.

1. Meals that Matter

Volunteering at shelters or community kitchens during Thanksgiving is a meaningful and popular way to give back. Families can spend quality time together preparing or serving food to those facing housing or food insecurity. Many organizations need support both before and after the main meal service, so contact your local food bank to learn how your family can best assist. If volunteer spots are filled, consider organizing a food drive of your own. Invite holiday guests to bring nonperishable food items to your family gathering and donate what you collect, or focus on supporting a specific family in need. You can follow this Create the Good® Do-It-Yourself Guide to get started.

2. Lend a Helping Hand to a Neighbor

Autumn brings piles of fallen leaves, making yard work a challenge—especially for older neighbors or individuals with disabilities. Gather your family to help rake leaves or winterize homes for neighbors who could use a hand. This outdoor activity is perfect for all ages, including young children, and teaches the importance of supporting those close to home. Check with local neighborhood associations, community centers, or churches to find residents who may need help with yard work.

If yard work isn’t needed, there may be someone in your community dealing with social isolation or loneliness. A simple visit or phone call can brighten their day—and your family’s, too. Here are some ideas to help foster connections and combat isolation.

3. Be a Friendly Voice

Thanksgiving is a time to connect and express gratitude, and AARP’s Friendly Voice offers a wonderful way to do just that. By volunteering as a Friendly Voice, you can share kindness and brighten someone’s day with a simple phone call. Friendly Voice volunteers provide a warm, caring presence for individuals seeking social connection, which is especially meaningful during the holiday season. This role is perfect for those who enjoy chatting, listening, and sharing a bit of holiday cheer through a friendly hello. 4. Kick Off the Day with a Turkey Trot

Many communities host "Turkey Trot" races around Thanksgiving to raise money for local causes or charities. These fun runs or walks are a fantastic way for families to come together, get active, and support a good cause. Consider registering as a family, and for extra fun, try wearing matching outfits or Thanksgiving-themed costumes to add to the holiday spirit!

5.  Build a Family Acts of Kindness Chain

This fun, at-home activity encourages families to brainstorm ways to give back. Start by cutting a collection of paper strips—try using fall-colored construction paper for a festive touch. On each strip, write down an act of kindness (for ideas, check here). Each time an act is completed, add the strip to a growing paper chain. As the chain expands, it will serve as a visual reminder of how small acts of kindness can make a big impact.

The fall season and Thanksgiving provide countless opportunities for families to express gratitude by helping others. Find the activities that resonate with your family and enjoy meaningful time together while making a difference.
