GIVE BACK AND SHARE THE LOVE THIS VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love and show appreciation for the people in our lives. This love-filled holiday is also a perfect opportunity to extend that affection to your community by volunteering. Through small acts of kindness and goodwill, you can spread love to others while experiencing the joy of giving back.

Here are some creative ways to volunteer around Valentine’s Day and throughout the month.

1. Help Combat Loneliness

Loneliness has been described as an “epidemic” by senior health officials, particularly affecting older adults who may face social isolation. You can help ease the effects of this isolation with simple, thoughtful gestures. Each year, Wish of a Lifetime’s Cupid Crew engages around 25,000 volunteers to deliver roses and handmade cards to older adults on Valentine’s Day. But your efforts don’t have to be limited to a single day—you can create and deliver cards anytime to local senior centers, assisted living facilities, or other places where older adults could use a cheerful boost. For more ideas, check out the Create the Good® Do-It-Yourself Guide to help foster connections and brighten someone’s day.

2. Show First Responders That You Care

First responders—firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians, and others—work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and healthy. Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to show your appreciation for their vital contributions. Consider creating Valentine-themed care packages or writing heartfelt notes to share your gratitude. You can also contact local hospitals or clinics to explore volunteer opportunities. For a broader expression of thanks, write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper to publicly recognize and celebrate the dedication of your local emergency services personnel.

3. Help Animals in Need

If you’re an animal lover, Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show some love to furry or feathered friends. Consider volunteering at a local animal shelter or rescue organization. While some opportunities may require training, you can begin the process that leads to walking dogs, playing with cats, or assisting with organizing and cleaning facilities. Additionally, reach out to local shelters to learn about their “wish list” items and host a small drive to collect essentials like blankets, toys, and treats. (For more inspiration, explore ideas for volunteering with animals either virtually or in person.)

4.  Shower Those Around You with Kindness

Brighten someone’s day with simple acts of kindness. Share uplifting content on social media, pay someone a heartfelt compliment, or write a note of gratitude to show your appreciation. Surprise someone by buying their coffee or offer to run errands or pick up groceries for a loved one who may be dealing with health or caregiving challenges. Small gestures like these can bring joy to others and may even inspire a ripple effect of kindness.

5. Extend Kindness to People Facing Challenges

Those relying on shelters—whether for the unhoused or survivors of domestic violence—often face significant challenges. You can make a difference by donating essential items such as books, gently used toys, bedding, clothing, or other necessities. Reach out to local shelters to learn about their specific “wish list” items and familiarize yourself with their policies and donation procedures. This ensures your contributions meet their residents’ needs and have the greatest impact.
