Here are a few ways to honor the moms in your community and give them a Mother’s Day they’ll never forget.
Let’s do brunch.
Treating a mom in your town to simple afternoon out is a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Check with seniors in your neighborhood who may be living alone to see if they have plans. It doesn’t even have to be on the traditional second Sunday in May. Any day will do. You can also organize a community brunch event for moms living alone. Here are a few recipes to get you started. Many Churches, senior centers and community shelters host Mother's Day events for which you can volunteer as well.
Surprise her with cards and flowers.
Brighten the day of a mom at a local hospital, senior center or shelter by delivering a handmade Mother's Day card with a note of thanks and encouragement. Or make a Mother’s Day corsage for the moms in your life, and surprise them on their special day. If you’re feeling particularly ambitious, you can organize a corsage-making party to spread the love, then sell the corsages at a church or community event to raise money for a local charity.
Give mom a break.
Do you know a new mom? Moms with babies, especially single moms in the workforce, could benefit from an encouraging phone call and an offer to handle housekeeping, pick-up groceries, or just hold the baby for a few hours so they can get a much-needed nap. If you know a stay-at-home mom, you can treat her to an afternoon off by volunteering to watch the kids.
Help moms access critical resources.
Assist a mom in accessing the public benefits she and her family may qualify for or in making her home more energy efficient. You can also help a single mom access the community resources she needs at singlemotherhelp.org. The site offers childcare information, grocery coupons and information on career training, housing, food assistance and more. Most of the organizations cited also have volunteer opportunities of their own.
